Transfer Case The Transfer Cases is that nice transmission like but bullkier item that sits attached to the transmission and also connects to the front and rear axles via the drive shaft. Some other names peopel give them ae 'gear boxes', transfer gearbox, transfer gearcase. It gets its power from the the transmission and then outputs that to both axles. Of course this item is only necessary in 4 wheel drive and all wheel drive vehicles. Most transfer cases are chain driven these days. In most modern vehicles 4 wheel drive is controlled by a combination of buttons and manual gear shifts which allow the drive to select the 'type' of 4 wheel drive they want, whether it be Low or High. This really depends on the actual terrain or environment that the driver is encountering. For instance, if you are on a steep uphill climb, "Low" would be apprpriate since you would not want to be going fast anyway. In the even you are traveling on a flat road but with snow or ice, 4 Wheel High would be more appropriate since you need some more speed.

In the even you find your transfer case on the blink you have a couple of options. First, you can rebuid yours or buy a used transfer case from a recycler or junk yard. Try and verify the miles if its used. If its rebuilt ask them where they get their parts for the rebuild and do a little research.
